Microsoft plans to block USB drives and other external storage formatted with the Resilient File System (ReFS) by default on Windows starting in January 2027, according to Wccftech.
Wccftech cites an official Microsoft support document published on October 13, 2026. The change is set to affect Windows 11, supported Windows 10 installations, and Windows Server.
The report says the restrictions are part of a broader effort to improve operating system security. It also says the vast majority of users are unlikely to notice a difference. The source does not provide further details about how the blocking will work.
