Microsoft says it is redesigning Windows 11 search to make it faster, use less memory and present results in a simpler panel. The updated experience is rolling out to testers in the Experimental channel, initially on a limited basis.
The new interface is built on WinUI 3. Microsoft says early testing shows substantial improvements in performance and memory use. The panel will show a single list instead of the current results list and preview pane. Microsoft also plans to improve how search handles typos and interprets queries when users enter a setting’s name incorrectly.
Later this year, Microsoft plans to test additional features. These include inline file previews with details such as an image’s resolution and size, and Bing-powered cards for queries such as “weather in London.” The company also showed search actions that could let users type commands to change settings, including switching to dark theme, muting sound or dimming the screen.
The changes address longstanding complaints that Windows 11 search is slow and cluttered. Some Reddit users have welcomed the improvements, while others argue the search box should focus only on finding things. Microsoft has also added an option to turn off web results in a recent Windows 11 update.
