Micron expects memory supply to tighten in 2027 and 2028

Micron expects memory and storage supply and demand to be much tighter in calendar 2027 and 2028 than in 2026, according to guidance accompanying its fiscal Q4 2026 results.

The company said it could not see when supply and demand would return to balance, even with additional industry DRAM cleanroom capacity planned and customers making new requests amid robust demand.

Micron also pointed to potential demand from “physical AI,” meaning robots. It said humanoid robots could require more than 200GB of DRAM and multiple terabytes of storage per unit. The company added that several physical AI customers are already sampling next-generation products, and said the category could become a significant driver of memory and storage demand by the end of this decade.

The guidance indicates that Micron expects tight conditions in both 2027 and 2028. The source article notes that robot-related demand could add pressure even if demand for AI data center servers eases, but cautions that Micron may be overstating how quickly robot use will grow. Micron’s statements do not specify when supply and demand will rebalance.
