Meta and Apple worked together to help Meta’s Muse Spark Open model run on Mac Studio computers using Apple’s MLX framework.
Meta says the model can run on a desktop using two Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studios. The company described it as the “most capable US open-weight model to date” and the “first model in its class” that can run this way. Those are Meta’s claims.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on X that Muse Spark Open’s weights were releasing that day and that the model ran well on the new Mac Studios following work with Apple. John Ternus, identified in the source as Apple’s new CEO, congratulated the team in a reply and said Mac Studio could run a model of Muse Spark Open’s caliber and scale efficiently from a desk.
Meta chief AI officer Alexandr Wang told Axios that the companies had been collaborating for several months. Meta describes Muse Spark Open as natively multimodal, with 816 billion total parameters, and says it excels at long-horizon tasks, complex software engineering, and multi-step reasoning.
Apple also published a technical post about MLX, which it describes as an array framework for machine-learning tasks on Apple Silicon, as well as Muse Spark Open and two other open models.
