Instagram brings Edits to Mac desktop

Instagram has brought Edits, its short-form video editing app, to desktop on Mac. The company says the version is designed for more complex projects that benefit from a larger screen, mouse and keyboard.

The move puts Edits in more direct competition with ByteDance’s CapCut, which has been available on Windows and Mac desktop since 2021. Meta launched Edits last year to challenge the video-editing app.

The desktop app includes licensed and royalty-free music, sound and video effects, and automatic captions in multiple languages. Audio and text styles saved in the mobile app sync to desktop. Users can customize keyboard shortcuts or import them from other editing software. Other features include a multi-track timeline, keyframes for transitions, audio waveforms and support for importing personal font files.

Creators can publish directly from the desktop editor to Instagram, with tagging and location features built in. Instagram says this removes the need to transfer a desktop edit to a phone for additional edits before posting. The editor supports horizontal and vertical video, with watermark-free exports in 4K resolution.

Instagram plans weekly updates and is working on letting creators edit one project across desktop and mobile. The company also says it will continue developing the mobile app, which is used by more than 50 million creators. Edits head Brett Westervelt described the desktop expansion in a company blog post.
