Honor has launched its Magic 9 flagship phones in China. The Magic 9 Pro Max has a redesigned camera island inspired by Arri’s three-lens turret design, first introduced in 1937’s Arriflex 35.
Arri contributed support for Arri LogC3 video, 14 Arri Look LUT presets, access to Arri’s library of official and third-party LUTs, and the APV 10-bit 4:2:2 codec. The phone has a 200-megapixel main camera with a 1/1.28-inch-type sensor, a 3.5x telephoto camera with the same resolution and a 1/1.4-inch sensor, and a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera. The ultrawide does not support all Arri Cinema Mode features. A directional microphone is designed for video recording.
Its square-format selfie camera can capture landscape or portrait images, a feature the article compares with Apple’s Center Stage. Honor says the wider camera island makes more room for an 8,800mAh battery, which has up to 40 percent silicon content.
The phone uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. It does not support the chip’s 8K60 or 4K240 video recording capabilities. Asked why Honor chose that chip, the company said it was “about delivering a complete and consistent flagship experience, rather than pursuing a single benchmark result.”
Honor confirmed an international launch is coming, but has not announced when.
