Google, Nvidia and Anthropic coalition targets 100 GW for data centers

Emerald AI has formed the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA) with Google and Nvidia, joined by Anthropic and utilities including AES, Constellation, National Grid, and NRG Energy. The coalition says it wants to help connect an additional 100 GW of data-center capacity to the grid.

AEMA plans to use demand response, allowing data centers to temporarily pause noncritical tasks or shift computing loads to locations with available grid capacity. The approach is intended as an alternative to relying on diesel backup generators, although the source notes that data centers already participate in demand-response programs by using generators.

Emerald AI’s software coordinates requests from utilities directly with data centers. Google is also developing tools in this area, while Enel X allows data centers to use uninterruptible power supplies to reduce peaks in electricity demand.

A Goldman Sachs study published last year said limiting maximum grid usage to 90% for several hours could free 76 GW of capacity. Emerald AI recently raised $150 million in a Series A led by Energize Capital and DCVC.

Ayse Coskun, Emerald AI’s chief scientist, told TechCrunch that the technology could reduce the industry’s need for new generating sources, but would not eliminate it entirely.
