Google brings Dreambeans AI storytelling app to India

Google has launched its experimental Dreambeans app in India, its first market outside the U.S. The app creates personalized, illustrated stories from users’ activity across connected Google services, without requiring a prompt.

Available on Android and iOS, Dreambeans now supports 13 Indian languages, including Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali, alongside English. Google introduced the app in June and made it available to all eligible U.S. users aged 18 and older less than two months before the India launch. It recently added a feature that uses its Veo video-generation model to animate images in select stories.

Google product manager Gozde Oznur said the company chose India because users had shown strong interest and Google services are widely used there. She said users can connect or disconnect services and delete Dreambeans data in the app. Oznur also said information deleted from connected services is removed from Dreambeans’ personalization system. Stories are visible only to the account holder, and the app is available to personal Gmail users, not enterprise users.

Market intelligence firm Sensor Tower estimates, shared with TechCrunch, put U.S. downloads at nearly 55,000 since June. About 63% came in September; downloads then fell 84% month over month to about 5,500 in October. In their first 30 days, Dreambeans had an estimated 29,000 downloads, compared with 7.4 million for Meta’s Muse, 2.8 million for ChatGPT, 362,000 for Grok Bot and 155,000 for Claude. Unlike those general-purpose apps, Dreambeans focuses on personalized stories. It can use information in multiple languages but generates stories in only one language at a time, Oznur said.
