Fujifilm’s new Instax Square 2 instant camera adds a way to change the look of photos without introducing digital features. Like the Instax Square SQ6, which launched in 2018, and follow-ups Square SQ1 and SQ40, the camera takes an analog approach.
A new mood filter switch places one of two colored filters in front of the lens. Warm creates a “subtle golden tone,” while Cool produces “crisp, blue-toned” results. The camera is expected to be available later this month for $119.95, the same price as the SQ1 in 2020. Color options are slate blue, brick red, and misty white.
Fujifilm is also introducing Soft Haze instant film. It produces photos with reduced color saturation and contrast, glowing highlights, and warm, diffused shadows. Each pack costs $18.99 for 10 exposures.
The Square 2 has a similar layout to the SQ1, with what Fujifilm calls a “new sculpted body design.” It has an optical viewfinder on the back and a small front mirror for framing selfies. A rotating lens ring switches among Close-up, Standard, and Landscape modes. The focus range runs from 0.3 meters to infinity. The camera also has automatic exposure and automatic xenon-flash adjustments.
