ESPN has begun streaming some sports in 4K HDR in the United States, with support first available in its app on Apple’s iOS and tvOS devices, including Apple TV 4K.
The upgrade covers ESPN and ESPN2 broadcasts of events including Monday Night Football, NBA and NHL games, selected live college football games, US Open tennis and major events such as the Super Bowl. ESPN says the higher-quality streams offer clearer edges, sharper colors and smoother movement.
ESPN says the rollout involves updates across its content distribution pipeline, from capturing events at sufficient resolution and dynamic range to decoding the video in the app. The company also says it can deliver 4K HDR through pay-TV providers, both traditional and digital.
Additional connected TV platforms are expected to follow later this year. ESPN says higher-quality streaming will reach more platforms before Super Bowl LXI. Disney+ in the US will also support the experience for ESPN Unlimited subscribers. The company has not specified which platforms will be next or announced plans to expand the rollout beyond the US.
