DJI Announces Romo 2 Robot Vacuums With Local Data Mode

DJI has announced the second generation of its Romo robot vacuums, the Romo 2 series. The company introduced two models: the transparent P2 and the opaque A2.

Both models offer improved navigation and can reportedly avoid cables, transparent objects such as mirrors and glass, and obstacles as small as 2mm. DJI also says Romo 2 can learn from obstacles it has encountered and adapt to new objects.

Two legs on the underside allow the vacuums to climb single steps up to 4cm (1.5in) high, or two steps at around double that height. They are not designed to climb staircases, but can cross small dividers and room thresholds.

On carpet, Romo 2 can reach up to 36,000Pa of suction. New brush and mop arms extend farther to clean sideboards and areas under furniture. DJI says the series reduces volume by 85 percent.

The main privacy change is Local Data Mode. It disconnects the DJI Home app from the internet, preventing photos and camera feeds from syncing. Users can also disable the vacuum’s camera and microphone and delete stored data. The mode is planned for Romo 2 in Q4 this year, with DJI planning to expand it to the first Romo models.

DJI has not announced pricing or a release date. A US launch is considered unlikely because of existing US restrictions and a new FCC ban on foreign-made robot vacuums.
