Deezer plans a filter for AI-generated music

Deezer is developing a toggle that will let listeners filter AI-generated music from the streaming platform. The feature is expected to arrive before the end of the year.

When enabled, the toggle will remove AI-generated tracks, albums and related artists from search results. Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier said in a statement that users had clearly asked for the option to remove this content and focus on human creators and their work. He added that the surge of AI music on Deezer helped prompt the new feature.

The company said a survey conducted last year found that around 45% of its customers wanted a way to remove AI music from their feeds. Deezer introduced AI-detection tools last year. At that time, AI-generated tracks made up 10% of daily uploads. In July, the company said such tracks accounted for more than 50% of daily uploads, averaging 90,000 tracks a day.

Other services have taken different approaches. Bandcamp has banned AI tracks, Tidal has stopped monetization for people who upload them, and Spotify labels AI tracks and artists more prominently. Variety reported in August that Apple Music was looking to label AI tracks before the end of the year.
