OpenAI is rolling out Locked Chats, a feature that moves selected ChatGPT conversations out of regular history and search results. Users can unlock them with a PIN on web and desktop, or with a PIN, Face ID, Touch ID, or device unlock on supported mobile devices.
TechRadar reports that the feature has several privacy limitations. A chat may remain open in the same browser tab after it is locked, and other devices may show its title until they refresh. Users may need to select Lock again after opening a protected chat to secure it again.
Locking a conversation also does not disable shared links created for it. Those links continue to work until deleted. Information ChatGPT added to regular Memory before the chat was locked is not removed automatically; users must delete it manually. New messages in locked chats will not update regular Memory, though details remembered in locked chats may be used in other locked conversations.
The feature is rolling out to Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans. OpenAI says it will create a new Project for locked chats on October 20, 2026. TechRadar notes that Temporary Chat may suit especially sensitive discussions, since those conversations do not appear in regular history or create memories.
