Celebrity AI deepfakes spread across social media

AI-generated images and videos of celebrities are spreading across social media, sometimes appearing alongside misleading claims and sexualized content, according to The Verge.

An Instagram account with more than a million followers posted an AI-generated image that purported to show actress Mia Goth wearing a T-shirt that read “MY EX IS MY BIGGEST FAN.” It gained nearly 500,000 likes. Goth’s representative, Christine Tripicchio, told The Verge the account had previously drawn complaints for posting counterfeit AI images. Instagram later removed it for impersonating a public figure.

The image also appeared in celebrity gossip coverage and Google search results. Searches prompted an AI-generated overview claiming Goth was taking a swipe at Shia LaBeouf after their divorce filing, citing blog posts about the image.

The Verge also found accounts posting sexualized AI-generated images of female celebrities. Asked about eight accounts, Meta spokesperson Alex Dziedzan said the company had removed some. Two, including the Goth and Scarlett Johansson accounts, appeared to be taken down. Dziedzan said Meta does not allow accounts to use someone’s likeness to pose as that person, whether content is authentic or AI-generated.

Other examples include an AI-generated Taylor Swift video with 1.8 million Instagram views, an AI Shrek clip with 3.1 million, and videos featuring Steve Jobs with 371,000 views, Lionel Messi with 2.1 million, and Formula 1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen with 2.9 million. The Verge describes platform-level litigation and notes the US Take It Down Act was signed into law in 2025.
