Canon adds free Dual Pixel 3D software to compatible cameras

Canon has released Dual Pixel 3D, free software that can turn compatible camera photos into immersive three-dimensional images and models.

The software uses depth and phase-detection data captured in a single shot through Dual Pixel CMOS AF. Canon says an exclusive algorithm converts photos into realistic 3D imagery, including models in OBJ or GLB formats and MP4 video with photographic textures.

Dual Pixel 3D will be available through the free Dual Pixel 3D Converter for Windows only from October 3. It requires Windows 11 64-bit 24H2 or later.

Canon describes the system as simple 3D image generation technology. Users can create 3D images and models from a single RAW photo without specialized equipment or viewing devices. Canon also says JPEG files captured by the EOS R8 Mark II are supported.

Those files include depth information from slightly different views, recorded by each pixel's two photodiodes. The software lets users adjust the depth for a stronger or subtler effect, while the depth data can also simplify background removal. Canon says the feature may be especially useful for product and still life photography, provided images are captured with a compatible lens.
