Apple Watch Features Add to Concerns About Always-Listening Devices

Apple says new Apple Watch features can transcribe nearby speech and summarize conversations. The announcement has renewed concerns about consumer devices that listen to people in shared spaces.

Apple says Live Rewind transcribes only the last 15 seconds of speech using a rolling buffer. Siri Recap provides “high-level summaries” of what it captures throughout the day, without identifying individual speakers. Apple also says an audible chime alerts people nearby when transcription is happening.

Critics quoted by The Verge argue that these signals do not establish consent before recording or listening begins. Privacy researcher Chris Gilliard said the approach shifts responsibility from companies to users and then to people nearby. He also questioned whether transcribing speech without storing audio changes whether the activity could count as recording.

The article places Apple’s features alongside Flock cameras, AI “Friend” pendants, and Meta’s smart glasses. Meta introduced glasses without a camera at Meta Connect 2026, as well as additional camera-equipped models. The company plans to offer 100 versions of its glasses by the end of the year, according to the article.
