Apple CEO John Ternus said AI is creating new opportunities for product development and described this as the most exciting time of his career. Ternus, a 25-year Apple veteran who previously led the company’s hardware operations, discussed the transition during a podcast with Greg Joswiak, Mark Spoonauer and Lance Ulanoff.
Ternus said Apple must approach AI thoughtfully and deliberately. He pointed to the Smart Take feature on the iPhone Duo, which can recognize when a user wants to take a photo without an explicit instruction. He said AI capabilities could also open the door to new kinds of products.
The discussion also covered Apple Pencil support on the iPhone Duo. Ternus said he does not view Apple’s product decisions as fixed rules, noting that Apple first established the value of a stylus through the iPad. Steve Jobs had dismissed iPhone stylus support in 2008.
Ternus said displays will remain important because people want to see information and process it effectively visually. He also said Apple’s wearable strategy is not changing, citing AirPods and Apple Watch. The iPhone Duo was described as the first two-in-one iPhone, while the discussion also referenced the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Pro.
