Amazon has refreshed its base Kindle for 2026, updating the 6-inch model that last received an upgrade in 2024. The device remains the smallest and lightest Kindle in the lineup, whose other models have screens measuring 7 inches or more.
Compared with the 2024 version, the 2026 Kindle is thinner at 6.85mm rather than 8mm, lighter at 140g rather than 158g, and, according to Amazon, 30% faster. Amazon also added new color options and moved the power button from the bottom to the upper-right side.
The screen is black and white with a glare-free finish. The base Kindle is not waterproof and does not support writing features. Its backlight is cool white, while other Kindle models offer a warm-toned option. Lock-screen ads appear by default, though ad-free versions are available for a higher price.
Amazon also sells a Kids version with the same hardware, a parent dashboard for monitoring reading habits and setting schedules, a one-year Amazon Kids+ subscription with thousands of titles for children aged 3–12, and a protective case. A more premium 2026 version has an aluminum build and 32GB of storage—double the standard model's capacity.
Some 2024 models remain on sale, but TechRadar reports that Amazon has raised their prices to match equivalent 2026 models. The article notes that the base Kindle lacks color reading and a 32GB option, and does not recommend it for readers seeking note-taking features or a waterproof device.
