Amazon has reportedly agreed to pay more than $120 million for a six-year deal to stream the Emmys on Prime Video, according to Deadline. Amazon and the Television Academy announced that the awards show will move from broadcast television to the streaming service.
The change begins with the 2027 ceremony, which is scheduled to air next September. The stream will be free to viewers worldwide, according to the announcement, so audiences will not need a Prime Video subscription to watch.
Deadline reported that Amazon is paying around $20 million to $25 million per year for the rights. Television Academy chair Cris Abrego said in a statement that Prime Video would give the Emmys a dedicated home, global reach and a broader commitment to the Academy and its mission throughout the year.
The deal comes as streaming services pursue major live events. Netflix acquired the rights to the SAG Awards, while the Oscars are set to move to YouTube in 2029. Streaming services have also become prominent at the Emmys: Apple TV had more wins than any other network at this year’s ceremony, led by Widow’s Bay, which won 14 awards.
