Akai showcases community-made mods for its upcoming MPC Sample Key

Akai is showing how developers are modifying its upcoming MPC Sample Key before the device has been formally announced. The company has given developers early access, and the keyboard-style sampler is expected to have open-source firmware.

In Instagram Reels posted last night and today, Akai demonstrated modifications made with vibe coding. They add synthesizers, including Native Instruments Massive, as well as virtual analog and FM synths. One clip shows the device running a custom operating system with “several different synths in it.”

The MPC Sample Key will likely run some version of the software used on the MPC Sample, with changes for its keyboard, pitch wheel and mod wheel. Unlike the higher-end MPC Key 37, it has no pads; samples are played with the keys.

The clips also show the regular MPC Sample running community-made synths built with Claude. That may indicate Akai plans to open-source the broader MPC Sample platform, though the clips do not confirm that. Akai CEO Jack O’Donnell told The Verge that inMusic brands, especially Akai, intend to support the modding community by giving developers early devices. He said the effort will also include open-sourcing some software and providing an SDK.
