Gemini can now generate and edit files in chats

Google Gemini users can now generate, preview and edit files directly in chats, including PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code, The Verge reports.

The new editing features are available to all Gemini users. PDF previews and editing work on the web and mobile, while the other file formats are available only on the web for now.

Google had added the ability to generate and download files in Gemini earlier this year. The new features let users make changes without leaving the app. Google says users can open documents in full-screen mode to edit them, or highlight text and ask Gemini questions about it or request changes. For example, users can select a table and ask Gemini to turn it into a graph.

Gemini already offered file editing through its integrations in Google Workspace apps, including the Gemini bar in Google Docs. The Verge also notes that Anthropic launched a feature earlier this year for generating and editing documents and presentations in Claude chats.
