Bank of America warns customers not to share banking passwords with AI agents

Bank of America is reminding customers not to share their banking usernames or passwords with AI tools that can act on their behalf. In an email titled “Protecting your finances in the AI world,” the bank urged customers not to share login details with another person or an outside service, including an AI-enabled tool or agent.

The warning comes as personal AI assistants become more popular and banks consider how AI agents could be used in finance. The source reports that banks and payment providers are grappling with unauthorized agents accessing customers’ money. It also describes agentic payments, in which people can set agents to buy things autonomously at the best price or time.

Sharing credentials could let an AI assistant take actions involving a customer’s finances without their knowledge. It could also lead a bank to suspect account theft and lock the customer out. A security flaw in an assistant could expose the credentials to others, potentially giving financially motivated hackers a way into the account.

Bank of America did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the email. The message said customers who share their credentials are responsible for activity resulting from that access.
