Ukrainian Detector Can Show Video From Russian Drones

Kyiv-based communications equipment company CODE380 has developed D·Vision SDR, a detector that can intercept a Russian drone’s video signal and show what its camera is filming in real time, according to reports by Ukrainian outlets DOU and UNITED24 Media.

The device uses software-defined radio (SDR), which processes radio signals in software. DOU reports that it scans frequencies from 500 to 8,700 MHz. Its developers say it covers that range without blind spots and is more sensitive than competing detectors. Software updates can adapt it when drones change frequencies, rather than requiring new receiver hardware.

According to DOU, the detector has been field-tested with Ukrainian military personnel during combat missions. The team reportedly releases software updates about twice a month. UNITED24 Media reports that CODE380 was founded about three months ago, while work on the detector began roughly a year and a half earlier.

A separate report from UNITED24 Media describes fiber-optic FPV drones modified by Ptashka Drones with microphones. The manufacturer says they can detect loud conversation from 20 to 30 meters away, light vehicles from 50 to 100 meters, and heavy vehicles up to 200 meters away. Ukrainian crews call drones that wait near expected routes “zhdun” drones. Ptashka Drones said on Telegram that “it is important not only to see well, but also to hear.”

The reports describe two different ways Ukrainian teams are adding sensing capabilities to drones and detection equipment. How long either approach remains useful is uncertain as Russian drone behavior and tactics change.
