Windows Server 2016 security updates end in January 2027

Microsoft says Windows Server 2016 will stop receiving security updates after it reaches the end of support on January 12, 2027. The January 2027 Windows security update will be the last available for the operating system, the company said in a message center update. After that, devices running Windows Server 2016 will no longer receive monthly security updates with protections against the latest threats.

The end of updates applies to all editions: Datacenter, Essentials, MultiPoint Premium and Standard. Microsoft will also end support for Windows Server 2016 Essentials features on the same date, including Remote Web Access and other Essentials-specific functionality.

Windows Server 2016 was released in September 2016 and became generally available on October 12, 2016. Its mainstream support ended in January 2022.

Microsoft advised IT administrators to plan an upgrade to Windows Server 2025. The newer release began rolling out to Windows Insiders in January 2024 and became generally available in November 2024. It is the latest Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release for Windows Server. Mainstream support is scheduled to end in November 2029, followed by five years of extended support through November 14, 2034.

Microsoft also offers a free 180-day trial of Windows Server 2025 through its Evaluation Center.
