Director James Watkins says he left Batman out of Clayface because he wanted to focus on the film’s central character, Matt Hagen, rather than force in a cameo.
In an interview with TechRadar, Watkins said the story follows one man in Gotham, a city of many millions. He said references and Easter eggs remain in the film, but adding a cameo for Batman would have felt inappropriate. The character is already active in Gotham during the film’s events, though no actor has been cast as the DC Universe’s Batman, according to the source.
Clayface also has no post-credits scene. Watkins said the film ends on the tragic image of Hagen’s full transformation into the shape-shifting villain. He wanted audiences to leave with that image in mind rather than interrupt its emotional effect with a tease for a future film.
The film is part of the DC Universe, where Batman has appeared in silhouette in Creature Commandos. Watkins’ explanation centers on keeping Clayface focused on Hagen and preserving the impact of its ending.
