NordVPN 6.0 for Linux adds NordWhisper and faster OpenVPN

NordVPN has released version 6.0.0 of its Linux app, dated October 22, 2026. The update changes how obfuscation works, adds kernel-level acceleration for OpenVPN on newer Linux kernels, and removes several older command-line interface commands.

Obfuscated servers now use NordWhisper instead of OpenVPN XOR. Selecting NordWhisper enables obfuscation automatically, so the nordvpn set obfuscate command has been removed. NordVPN describes NordWhisper as its censorship-resistant protocol, launched in January 2025 for networks that block VPNs. The nordvpn set protocol command now selects both the technology and protocol; one example is nordvpn set protocol openvpn_udp.

OpenVPN has been updated to version 2.7.7. Data Channel Offload (DCO) works out of the box on Linux kernel 6.16 or newer, shifting OpenVPN data handling to the kernel. In TechRadar’s testing, NordLynx reached 780–950+ Mbps, while NordVPN’s OpenVPN implementation reached 109–173 Mbps.

Every regular server now supports P2P, replacing the dedicated P2P server group. The update also removes legacy aliases, including threatprotectionlite, tplite, tpl, and cybersec. Auto-connect can no longer target a server number; users can select a country, city, server group, or the fastest server. NordVPN says its Linux app does not update automatically. On Debian-based distributions, its instructions are to run sudo apt-get update and then sudo apt-get install nordvpn.
