Pebble adds plug-in support to its smartwatch platform

Pebble is adding plug-in support to Pebble OS, a change that could give developers more options for building apps and watch faces. The feature is available now as a developer preview, but there is no announced timeline for a full rollout.

Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky announced the update, which TechRadar reported via Android Authority. Migicovsky called it “the biggest change to the SDK since... forever.”

Plug-ins are pre-packaged add-ons that developers can use to provide information or actions to other apps, watch faces and the Index agent. Examples include checking the weather, controlling music playback, activating smart lights and interacting with AI. Migicovsky compared them with Apple Watch complications, describing Pebble’s plug-ins as more flexible.

The feature could make apps and watch faces more consistent and versatile. Users will also be able to set permissions for individual plug-ins, offering more control over what they can access. Some requests, such as checking a calendar or unlocking a front door, could be handled by plug-ins instead of requiring an app to do all the work.

Pebble first appeared in 2013 and returned in 2025. The update is a step forward for the Pebble 2.0 project, though the source gives no date for its wider release.
