Donald Trump said he would “probably pass” on renaming the Atlantic Ocean after discussing the idea with Google CEO Sundar Pichai at a rally on Wednesday night, according to The Washington Post, as reported by The Verge. Trump said Pichai told him, “Oceans are different, sir,” and asked him not to make the request because oceans cover many countries. Google did not immediately respond to The Verge’s request for comment.
Trump said he had called Google Maps about renaming the Atlantic. He also floated calling the Pacific Ocean the “American Ocean,” asking how Europe would feel about the idea. In remarks quoted by The Verge, Trump said he was looking for a river to rename, mentioning the Hudson and Mississippi rivers, but did not identify a choice.
Google Maps changed the names of Lake Ontario and the Gulf of Mexico after Trump’s executive orders, according to The Verge. Apple also adopted the name changes on its maps, while some other map apps, including MapQuest, did not.
