Electronic Arts says it will bring Respawn and DICE together to work on a future project. EA did not name the project. Variety reported that multiple sources identified it as Star Wars Battlefront 3.
EA executives Cam Weber, president and chief studio officer, and David Tinson, president and chief operating officer, told Variety the company is focusing on live-service online games after the success of Battlefield 6. They called the game “a great success” and said they had learned from its launch and live service.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 launched in 2017, and its live-service support ended in 2020. Earlier reports said a new game would be developed at DICE alongside Bungie, the studio behind Destiny.
EA also said it plans to invest heavily in Apex Legends over the next few years, with new multiplayer modes and other content. The company cited upcoming launches of Marvel’s Iron Man and Star Wars Jedi 3, and said it would continue supporting EA Sports, The Sims and Skate.
The restructuring includes 400 layoffs and the permanent closure of BioWare. Roughly 50 people were laid off from the studio, and work on Mass Effect 5 was canceled.
