Spotify Wants AI Agents to Choose Its Music Service

Spotify sees AI agents as a way to reach listeners, as people increasingly ask assistants to handle tasks such as finding music. Co-CEO Gustav Söderström said the company wants to be the media service people use through any agent, as well as through Spotify’s own app.

The company reported 788 million monthly active users and nearly €5 billion in revenue in the third quarter. Söderström said Spotify has integrated with Meta’s Muse assistant, ChatGPT and Claude. He described possible requests such as finding music for a run, creating a podcast recommendation based on a conversation, or resuming an audiobook.

Söderström also outlined a more tailored music feature: listeners could ask Spotify to review their listening history back to 2008, identify favorites, adjust their speed, sort them by key and BPM, and mix them into a running playlist matched to their cadence. Spotify has years of listening data, including artists users revisit, songs they skip and music they discover.

He said Spotify does not send listener data to its partners. Instead, an agent makes a request to Spotify, whose own systems interpret it and select what to play. Access by outside agents is already a point of friction: Amazon has blocked Meta’s Muse from shopping on its platform. Söderström presented Spotify’s approach as a way to participate in agent growth while keeping the service’s own systems involved.
