Tesla has started production of its Optimus humanoid robot at its factory in Fremont, California, the company announced Wednesday. The factory space had previously been dedicated to electric-vehicle production.
In its third-quarter letter to shareholders, Tesla said the robots coming off the line were its first production-quality Optimus units. The company said it would continue to refine the hardware and manufacturing process, and that the current process was suitable for a commercial product.
The news came as Tesla reported a 43% year-over-year drop in net income to $787 million for the third quarter. It earned $1.37 billion in the same period in 2025. The company said spending on artificial intelligence projects and Optimus weighed on profits.
Total third-quarter revenue was $28.04 billion, slightly below the $28.09 billion reported for the third quarter of 2025. Revenue from electric-vehicle sales was flat year over year at $20 billion. Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles during the quarter, about 6,000 more than in the previous quarter, but fewer than a year earlier.
Revenue from services and other activities grew 33% year over year to $4.6 billion. The segment, which includes subscriptions to Full Self-Driving, generated a record $734 million in gross profit for the quarter. Solar and energy-storage revenue fell 16% to $2.8 billion; Tesla attributed the decline to tariff-related customer refunds.
