Google is adding its Personal Intelligence feature to Gemini in vehicles, allowing the assistant to draw on information from connected Google services to personalize responses. The company announced the update Tuesday.
The feature can use information from Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Google Search history and other connected services to understand a driver’s preferences, activities and past experiences. Drivers must opt in, and Google says they can turn the feature on or off at any time and choose which apps to connect.
Google will offer Personal Intelligence through Android Auto, which runs on a user’s phone and projects navigation, media and messaging to a vehicle’s infotainment system, and through Google Built-in, which integrates Google software and services directly into a vehicle. The feature starts rolling out in Android Auto today and will expand to vehicles with Google Built-in in the coming months.
Google says Gemini can handle complex requests in natural language and answer related questions together. For example, while a driver navigates to an airport, the assistant could flag a delayed flight listed in their calendar. The driver could also ask for the flight gate and whether the flight is still on time, with Gemini answering both questions at once.
Gemini first launched in Android Auto last November. Google’s Personal Intelligence feature launched across the U.S. in March and is now in beta in global markets. The company says users retain control over their data.
