World ID for Zoom adds a Human Badge to video calls

World has launched World ID for Zoom, a verification tool that lets enterprise customers show that a participant has been verified as human. The service is generally available, according to TechRadar.

Verified participants receive a “Human Badge” next to their video feed. World says the feature is intended to help businesses distinguish real people from AI-generated deepfakes.

To enroll, workers must visit a physical Orb device, which scans their iris and creates a cryptographically secure biometric reference. Businesses can choose to install an Orb onsite. During Zoom calls, a selfie in World’s mobile app is checked against that reference.

World said deepfake detection can be challenging and can lead to an “arms race” between detection and creation. The company is instead using identity verification to establish whether participants are human.

The report also cites Gartner research finding that 36% of senior cybersecurity leaders had experienced at least one deepfake incident during a video call in the previous 12 months. It notes that Microsoft has also updated Teams to support third-party deepfake detection.
