NordVPN adds direct WireGuard configuration downloads

NordVPN appears to have added official WireGuard configuration downloads to Nord Account, letting users connect through compatible routers without assembling a file with unofficial scripts. The company has not announced the change, and its blog post about configuration files still says it does not offer WireGuard files.

The feature was first spotted by a user on the r/nordvpn subreddit, and NordVPN’s support documentation now describes how to download the files. Users can choose a server in Nord Account’s manual setup section, select WireGuard and download its configuration. NordVPN recommends choosing servers marked “Verified.” Its guides explain how to import the files into the official WireGuard apps for Windows and Linux.

The downloads address a limitation of NordLynx, NordVPN’s WireGuard-based protocol. NordVPN introduced NordLynx across its apps in 2020, but it does not work with standard WireGuard clients. Before the new files appeared, manual router setups were limited to older protocols such as OpenVPN, unless users bought the Privacy Hero 2 from FlashRouters or followed unofficial, multi-step workarounds.

In TechRadar’s router VPN tests, NordVPN reached more than 950 Mbps over NordLynx and peaked at 173 Mbps on OpenVPN. Compatible routers include Asus models, UniFi gateways and OpenWrt builds, according to the report. The new configuration files could let their owners connect without the NordVPN app.
