Google Fitbit Edge Brings Back a Screen and Adds GPS

Google has unveiled the Fitbit Edge, a slim fitness tracker with a screen, positioning it between the Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch. Google describes its display as the “largest and brightest tracker screen yet.”

The hybrid OLED screen offers 46% more viewing area than previous Fitbits and is designed to remain visible in direct sunlight. The tracker uses Tiles for browsing and supports calls, notifications and Google Maps, but does not run full Wear OS.

Its exercise app can automatically detect up to 100 workout types. Google says that feature will also come to the Fitbit Air. Unlike the Air, the Edge has onboard GPS, allowing users to track routes and speeds without relying on a phone.

The tracker also includes menstrual cycle and sleep tracking, an AI fitness coach, Insulin Resistance Trends and ECG scans. Its chassis is 11.5mm thick and has metal touchpoints and a physical button.

Google says the battery lasts a week, and a 90-minute charge can bring it to 100%. The battery is replaceable, and the bands can be swapped. The Fitbit Edge costs $179.99 or £159.99; Australian pricing has not been announced.
