The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has reported 1,615 applications for new top-level domains (TLDs), submitted by 481 applicants. It is the first time in years that ICANN has accepted applications for new TLDs, the suffixes used at the end of web addresses.
Interest in AI-related domains is prominent. Ten companies, including Meta and OpenAI, applied for .agent, while seven, including OpenAI, applied for .agi. Six companies, including OpenAI, applied for .asi. The Verge says those applicants appear to be responding to President Trump’s call to replace “artificial intelligence” with “super intelligence.” Four companies applied for .intelligence, and Meta is one of two applicants for .superintelligence.
OpenAI applied for 15 TLDs in total, and Meta applied for 21. The applications also include 345 branded domains, such as .applebees, .bankofamerica, .zillow and .zoom. Meta applied for .facebook, .instagram, .messenger, .meta, .frommeta and .threads; Bluesky applied for .bsky; OpenAI for .chatgpt, .codex, .openai and .gpt, among others; and Anthropic for .anthropic and .claude.
The applications are an early step in creating new TLDs. The Verge reports that none will become official before sometime next year. Some alternate TLDs, including .ai and .app, have gained popularity, while .com remains especially prominent.
