Ring plans to launch its Smart Lock in the United States in Q1 2027 for $249. The lock will come in black, silver and brass finishes. Ring has not announced plans for an international launch.
Its unusual feature is a manual backup for a dead battery. Users can turn a front-mounted crank, called the Power Dial, five to eight times. That charges a supercapacitor, giving the lock 10 to 30 seconds of power—enough to enter a code and unlock the door. The mechanism does not recharge the main quick-replace battery pack, which founder Jamie Siminoff says lasts about a year.
Siminoff told TechRadar that he explored the idea with Amazon Q, Amazon’s internal AI assistant, to check whether a small motor and supercapacitor could make hand-cranked power practical. He said AI helped him test the concept before asking a team to build it, and that developing the lock was “a thousand times easier” with AI.
The lock also supports fingerprint scanning, numeric codes, the Ring app and Alexa. Amazon Sidewalk is built in to keep it online if home Wi-Fi fails. Ring has not announced Apple Home or Matter support. The product has not yet been authorized by the FCC, and its specifications could change before launch.
