Keurig Alta replaces pods with compressed coffee tablets

Keurig is introducing Alta, a single-serve coffee system that uses compressed coffee tablets called AltaRounds instead of individually packaged K-Cup pods. The company says K-Cups will remain available during a gradual transition.

Each AltaRound has a recipe code printed on its surface. A new Alta brewer reads the code to set the brewing style, pressure and temperature. The tablets have a thin plant-based coating intended to preserve freshness, reduce breakage in transit and help create brewing pressure.

The Alta brewer includes a milk frother and a color screen that guides users through coffee and espresso drinks. It also works with K-Cups. Keurig Alta Coffee & Espresso is the first AltaRounds brand, with six varieties planned after the machine launches. Peet’s Coffee AltaRounds are also coming, with other brands to follow.

The tablets come in an SFI-certified paperboard carton. Their coating uses an NSF-certified plant-based material that includes alginate from seaweed harvested off France’s coast. The whole AltaRound, including its coffee and coating, is certified for home and commercial composting.

Keurig is offering a limited early access bundle in the US until October 15, while supplies last. Pre-orders are due to ship October 21. Priced at $499.99, the bundle includes a brewer, four boxes of AltaRounds and glassware made by Ethan Rode of FLUR.
