Huawei’s Ruiying Z10 is an add-on zoom lens with its own image sensor, designed for use with two phones in the Mate 90 series. The accessory turns the phone into a camera system that uses the handset for power, processing and software.
The Z10 contains a 1-inch-type, 50-megapixel RYYB sensor, which the source says is larger than any sensor inside the phone. Its zoom lens covers 24–240mm and has a variable f/2.0–f/4.5 aperture. Unlike earlier teleconverters with fixed focal lengths, the Z10 offers a true zoom, according to The Verge.
At 346g, the accessory is too large for a pocket, but The Verge describes it as smaller and more portable than most mirrorless cameras. Huawei says it attaches directly to compatible phones, without an intermediary mounting case, and works with the collector’s edition of the Mate 90 Pro Max and the Mate 90 RS. These are the only two Mate 90 models with a screw mount around the camera island, the source reports.
The phones also have their own camera systems. Their main camera has a 50-megapixel sensor described as 1.1.28-inch-type and a variable f/1.4–f/4.0 aperture; they also have a 200-megapixel 4x periscope telephoto camera and a 40-megapixel ultrawide camera. Other listed specifications include a 6.9-inch OLED display with peak brightness of 12,000 nits, a 6,800mAh battery and Huawei’s Kirin 9050 Pro chip. Huawei says the Mate 90 and Mate 90 Pro are slightly smaller, with streamlined specifications.
