America.gov Chatbot’s Minecraft Monologue Is an Easter Egg, Not a Glitch

The U.S. government launched its first public-facing AI chatbot, America.gov, on Tuesday. The project was built with help from Google and SpaceXAI, and the chatbot has so far proved difficult for people to jailbreak, according to TechCrunch.

Ask it about Minecraft, however, and it produces a roughly 1,800-word monologue that may seem like an AI breakdown. TechCrunch reports that the text is a rewriting of the game’s “End Poem,” written by Julian Gough and shown after players beat the game. The response includes references to government paperwork and USA.gov.

It is unclear who added the Minecraft reference. President Donald Trump said in a speech that 20-year-old programmer Edward Coristine was a lead engineer on the project. Coristine is also known by the nickname “Big Balls” and for his involvement in Elon Musk’s DOGE, TechCrunch reported.

The article notes that the chatbot says Joe Biden won the 2020 election, which Trump continues to deny. It describes the Minecraft passage as an easter egg rather than evidence that the chatbot is hallucinating. The source’s author argues that the poem’s quality reflects the creativity of its human inspiration, while cautioning that the government chatbot has not posed a threat to humanity or poetry “at least as far as we know.”
