Microsoft Cites Limited Surface Lineup for AMD’s Absence

Microsoft says the size of its Surface lineup is why it does not currently offer Surface PCs with AMD processors. Brett Ostrum, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for Surface, gave that explanation in an interview with Windows Central.

“We love working with AMD. We have a limited portfolio, and so we have to make our choices pretty wisely in terms of what we're doing and where we're doing,” Ostrum said. He also said, “I love working with AMD.”

AMD processors were options in the Surface Laptop 3 and Surface Laptop 4, but have not appeared in later Surface PC models. The current lineup includes devices with Intel and Snapdragon processors, while Microsoft has also indicated that NVIDIA-powered Surface hardware is coming.

Microsoft continues to work with AMD in other areas, including Xbox hardware. Ostrum’s comments explain the company’s stated reason for AMD’s absence from current Surface PCs; he did not say whether future Surface models will use AMD processors.
