US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Sunday that US and Chinese officials had discussed creating a new “notification mechanism” for artificial intelligence incidents that could affect national security.
Bessent made the comments after what he called successful talks with China's Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York. The meeting took place before US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are due to hold a summit in Washington later this week.
The officials also discussed plans to operationalise a process for identifying possible tariff cuts on goods through the Board of Trade. A truce in the tariff war between the world's two biggest economies is due to expire on 10 November.
Bessent said greater transparency between the world's number one and number two AI powers was important. China's state news agency Xinhua described the exchanges as candid, in-depth and constructive, and said the sides had discussed AI. The BBC said it had contacted the Chinese embassy in the US for comment.
The talks came as researchers warned about AI's potential risks and industry figures called for a more cautious approach. The US and China are competing for leadership in AI and technology. Trump has dismissed some concerns, saying the US cannot lose its edge to China and that “whoever wins in AI, wins”.
