Google has started rolling out an offline mode for Google Translate’s Live Translate feature, according to Android Authority. The update could make the tool more useful when travelers have unreliable connectivity or want to avoid mobile data use, although access is currently limited.
Offline Live Translate works across 11 languages: English, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Russian and Swedish. However, English must be one of the two languages being spoken. Offline translation between French and German, for example, is not supported.
The feature is currently limited to the Google Pixel 11 series, Pixel 10 line and Pixel 9 series. Older Pixel phones and devices from other brands are not included in the rollout. TechRadar’s James Rogerson describes the restriction as a significant limitation and suggests it may be temporary, but Google has not confirmed plans to expand compatibility.
Offline Live Translate is not the only option available on smartphones. iOS already offers an offline Live Translation feature, while Samsung Galaxy phones have a similar offline capability. Google’s Live Translate is not exclusive to Pixel phones, so broader support could eventually extend the offline upgrade to other devices.
