Capgemini to coordinate Sweden’s new SWEN emergency network

Sweden’s Agency for Civil Protection has appointed Capgemini as systems integrator for SWEN, the network intended to replace Rakel 2030, according to Techtidningen.

Capgemini will work under the agency’s direction to coordinate the network’s technical components and suppliers into a coherent system. The assignment also includes quality assurance, technical project-management support and coordination between suppliers.

SWEN, The Swedish Emergency Network, is intended to provide communication services to the more than 700 organisations that currently use Rakel. The network will partly use 3GPP-standardised 5G technology for communications within Sweden’s total defence system.

Ericsson has previously received the contract for the core network. Telia is supplying the radio access network for the initial pilots, while Airbus is responsible for a solution to support migration between Rakel and SWEN.

According to the agency, the contract for a radio access network with mission-critical priority will be awarded shortly. Procurement of an MCX platform is under way, with the award planned for mid-2027.
