Sanders and Bannon call for stronger AI oversight

Senator Bernie Sanders is working with former White House strategist and Trump ally Steve Bannon to push governments toward stronger oversight of artificial intelligence, according to TechRadar's summary of Reuters reporting.

Their arguments include potential job losses, loss of control over advanced AI, biological warfare, rising energy prices and the concentration of power among a small number of AI companies. Sanders says tens of millions of jobs could be removed by AI, making it harder for younger generations to find work.

Sanders is urging Trump to use an upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping to establish an international agreement pausing the development of advanced AI. Separate legislation he is pursuing would permanently ban artificial superintelligence, temporarily pause other advanced AI development, create a federal AI regulator and support further international agreements.

Bannon has criticized the Trump administration's light-touch approach, attributing it to close ties with American technology companies. He also emphasizes blocking China's access to advanced American chips and other relevant hardware.

Views remain divided across individuals and political parties. The administration is generally seen as favoring American innovation, while House Speaker Mike Johnson has warned that slowing US development could cost the country its competitive advantage over China.
