CNBC reported that Apple released iOS 27 on Monday with a redesigned Siri personal assistant, ahead of the iPhone 18 reaching stores this week. Apple says the new Siri is in beta. Users must opt in through the Settings app, and some may have to join a waitlist before receiving access.
Apple is positioning the iPhone 18 models for artificial intelligence workloads because of their fast chips and the personal data stored on them, including calendars and texts. CEO John Ternus described the approach as personal intelligence at the company's iPhone launch event, his first since succeeding Tim Cook.
Compared with frontier AI from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, Apple uses smaller models that it develops and that can often run on iPhone and laptop chips. More complex queries use Private Cloud Compute, which relies on Google Cloud infrastructure with Nvidia and Intel chips. Apple is also using Google's Gemini to build its own models.
The new Siri can search local texts, emails, and calendar appointments, answer general questions, search the web, and retain previous queries in a new Siri app. Users can also reply to Siri's responses. It is available in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support planned for next month. Apple said it will initially be unavailable in the EU and China for regulatory reasons.
