IPVanish rebuilds VPN network with faster ports and direct peering

IPVanish has completed a two-year, ground-up rebuild of its entire VPN server network. The company says the work has increased average per-server throughput by 41% across the network.

The network now uses 50Gbps server ports, up from 10Gbps previously. IPVanish also says it peers directly at more than 40 internet exchanges worldwide, which can provide shorter routes between customers and the networks they use.

IPVanish now spans 150 locations across 55 countries. The company labels physical and virtual servers, and says every major city has two independent data centers with separate providers and connectivity. That redundancy is intended to keep service available if one data center loses power or connectivity.

Behind the scenes, IPVanish has moved from IPTables to NFTables to process traffic more efficiently. It has also added OpenVPN Data Channel Offload on Windows, promising connections that are almost three times faster. The change is expected to reduce the performance gap between OpenVPN and WireGuard.

NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Proton VPN remain leading names for raw speed and scale, while IPVanish says its port capacity and network changes are designed to improve consistency. Because capacity is shared, actual performance will depend on testing.
