Australia's NBN handled major speed upgrades one year later

One year after NBN Co launched its Accelerate Great program, Australia's fixed-line network appears to have handled faster plans without a broad reliability collapse.

On September 14, 2025, NBN 100, also called Home Fast, rose from 100Mbps to 500Mbps. NBN 250 Home Superfast increased to 750Mbps, while Home Ultrafast doubled its maximum upload speed to 100Mbps. NBN Co also introduced Home Hyperfast, offering wholesale speeds of up to 2,000/200Mbps over FTTP and 2,000/100Mbps over HFC.

ACCC measurements show average busy-hour performance moving from 102% of advertised speed before the upgrade to 100% afterward and 99.4% in its June 2026 report. The faster plans still delivered substantial speeds:

• FTTP NBN 500 averaged 102.5%, or slightly over 500Mbps, between 7pm and 11pm.
• HFC NBN 500 averaged 97.4%, or about 487Mbps.
• FTTP NBN 750 averaged 97.3%, or about 730Mbps.

Active connections at 100Mbps and faster grew from around 695,000 to over 3 million, while 100Mbps connections fell from just over 2.1 million to just over 713,000. The ACCC recorded 0.16 outages lasting more than 30 seconds per fixed-line service per day. However, underperforming services rose from around 3% to 4% and then 5.6%.
