Teclab Mods NVIDIA RTX 5090 With 8-Pin Connectors as 16-Pin Failures Continue

Reports of 16-pin power connectors melting on expensive graphics cards continue to increase. The connector has been linked to damage affecting NVIDIA’s RTX 50 and RTX 40 graphics cards, as well as various AMD RX 9000 GPUs that use the same design.

Teclab modders have created what they describe as the world’s first NVIDIA RTX 5090 graphics card converted to use 8-pin power connectors instead of the 16-pin design. Their work shows that the older connector format can handle the card’s power demands in this configuration.

The reports also suggest that the problem is not simply caused by high power draw. Lower-wattage graphics cards have been affected, pointing to other factors in the connector and cable design or their use.

NVIDIA and its partners, especially PCI-SIG, have faced continued scrutiny as these failures accumulate. Teclab’s RTX 5090 modification offers a direct demonstration of an alternative power-connector approach, but the source does not establish whether it is suitable for wider production or use.
