Windows 11 KB5124008 and KB5122880 updates released for 25H2/24H2 and 23H2

Microsoft has released the Windows 11 KB5124008 and KB5122880 cumulative updates for versions 25H2/24H2 and 23H2. The September 2026 Patch Tuesday release addresses security vulnerabilities, bugs, and new features.

Microsoft says the updates include security patches for 1,000 vulnerabilities discovered in previous months. This is the ninth Patch Tuesday release in 2026. The updates are based on 24H2, so 25H2 receives the same fixes. Microsoft says there are no exclusive changes between the versions.

The updates add new taskbar customization options, including positions at the bottom, top, left, or right of the screen. A smaller taskbar option reduces icon and taskbar height on smaller devices. The Taskbar behaviors section is also expanded by default.

Start menu changes include small and large size options alongside “Automatic (default),” renaming “Recommended” to “Recent,” and controls for hiding the user’s name and profile picture. New section-level controls can independently show or hide Pinned, Recommended, and All.

Windows Search gets a simpler home page, clearer result sources, and a setting for web and Microsoft Store suggestions. Windows also indexes frequently used folders automatically. Other changes improve File Explorer Home, Settings display navigation, brightness persistence, Windows setup, and the Get Started app.
